Question a Senator, get tasered!
The freedom to speak inoffensively is a freedom not worth having.
He's an agitator and kind of a dick, as you can see in the full video below, but that's the price of freedom and free speech. I had no idea police used tasers against unarmed citizens until this year, and this truly sickens me. Oh, and John Kerry is a real class act to drone on and on and on while a student is tasered right before him. No wonder he conceded... in a way, he answers the guy's question.

Okay, I'm really torn on this one. First of all, campus security may have decided that he was a disruption and infringing on the rights of others to listen to John Kerry and ask questions of him. Whereas this guy seems to have been trying to monopolize the microphone. It happens, you get some crazies who keep going on and on and on ... and people who want to ask their own questions don't get to because of one jerk.
So their decision to cut the mic and escort him off is defensible, although one might argue there was a better course available. As they were escorting him away he physically attacked them. So escalation is allowed, which you saw.
However, tasering him after all that is not defensible. It seems from the video that the situation was more or less under control and so there was no need to use the taser.
Tasering unarmed citizens occurs often and for good reasons. Even people who are 'unarmed' can pose serious threats to officers. The alternative is to use billy clubs or pepper spray to force the person into submission. But billy clubs can kill and pepper spray doesn't always work.
Think of it this way though, if a citizen was armed, the police would have a gun pointed at them, not a taser.
Oh, I agree - he was hogging and budding in line, so cutting his mic and escorting him off, it's no big deal to me.
*I* could beat that guy up - when you've got 5 or 7 cops on him, two of which are way bigger than me (I'm 6'1 and 170), there's no need for billy clubs or pepper spray or anything else.
Throw him out ranting and raving, eject him - fine. That's not infringing on his free speech. But tasering him? You can be a lunatic without being piled on, nevermind physically hurting someone.
I'm just shocked over the whole thing. That's something that Putin would have goons do to Kasparov supporters.
It just highlights the American mentality which is to shoot first, try democracy later (if ever).
I don't know any Americans with that mentality. And I'm sure glad I don't know those cops.
Riiiiight, because Canadian police never, EVER exceed the bounds of reasonable force.
*ahem*
Yes you might be able to take him on JBG, but also remember that if the police say, broke his arm during a struggle, that he would sue the police for excessive force. That might have factored into their reasoning.
As for John Kerry, I'm not sure what you would expect him to do/say?
if the police say, broke his arm during a struggle, that he would sue the police for excessive force.
That's interesting - I can see what you mean, yes. Surely six cops can handle one guy without injuring anyone, but I *do* take your point, and he is the kind of person who would do that, I imagine.
Police are really buggered either way I think. I mean, if they taser them, then they are using excessive force. If they wrestle with them, then perhaps an officer gets hurt, or if the guy gets hurt, he sues for damages.
There's an article in the National Post talking about this tasering incident by the way.
